Youth roller derby players will need quad roller skates, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, helmet and a mouthguard. Roller derby is a full contact sport and falling is an important part of any skater’s training from day one. Please be sure your skater has well-fitted protective gear.
Quad Skates: Recommended derby brands include Sure Grip, Riedell and Chaya. If you are purchasing skates, please get a “speed boot” for roller derby. Please avoid ordering online. It is always best to get fitted in-person when possible. A quad rental skate is included at no charge for those just starting out.
Protective Gear: Recommended derby brands include 187 Killer Pads, Triple 8 and S-One. The fit is very important for a full contact sport. Please get fitted in-person for gear if possible. Avoid buying online. Protective gear is available for rent on-site at Derby United for $5/practice until you are able to get your own.
We recommend heading over to San Diego’s local roller derby shop, Sin City Skates. They will set you up with the Youth Derby package that will include all necessary items to play the sport. They are a locally-owned shop and know their stuff when it comes to derby gear. Call over to the shop or go in-person to their Kearny Mesa location to find out more.
